Oprah’s mother left her in the care of her grandmother but she also used to beat her a lot. There was no one to take care of her, no one to love her. Because her grandmother’s financial situation was unstable, Winfrey was forced to wear potato sacks as clothing to cover her body.

When Oprah was 9 years old, she was raped by her cousin, uncle, and a family friend. After years of abuse, neglect, and molestation, she ran away from home at the age of 13. When she was 14, she became pregnant and gave birth to a premature baby who couldn’t survive and died shortly after birth.

Winfrey was then sent to live with the man she calls her father, Vernon Winfrey, a barber in Nashville, Tennessee, and landed a job in radio while still in high school. Though her fellow students teased her for her poverty and skin color, she never gave up.

Oprah studied hard and took public speaking and drama. By 19, she was a co-anchor for the local evening news. Winfrey’s often emotional, extemporaneous delivery eventually led to her transfer to the daytime talk show arena.

After boosting a third-rated local Chicago talk show to first place, she excelled in her career and gained worldwide fame. Later she launched her own production company. Now she owns a cable network named OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network).

Winfrey became a millionaire at the age of 32 when her talk show received national syndication. She is now the richest African-American lady of the 20th century and has a net worth of over 2.9 billion US Dollars.

Winfrey was called “arguably the world’s most powerful woman” by CNN and TIME in the year 2004.
